Northwest Naturals of Portland, Oregon is voluntarily recalling two lots of frozen raw pet food that may be contaminated with Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, or both. The voluntary recall affects 53 cases (1,272 pounds) of Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe, which is sold as cat food and as a protein topper for dogs, along with 19 cases (684 pounds) of Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe.
The contamination came to light after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration collected and tested samples of the products. The Frozen Chicken Recipe tested positive for Salmonella. The Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe tested positive for both Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this voluntary recall.
Health Risks for Pets and People
Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes can make pets sick, and both can spread to the people who handle contaminated food or care for an infected animal. The risk to people rises sharply when hands, bowls, utensils, and prep surfaces are not washed thoroughly after contact.
In pets: Dogs and cats infected with Salmonella or Listeria monocytogenes may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets show only a decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. A pet that seems healthy can still carry the bacteria and pass it to other animals or to people. If your dog or cat ate one of the recalled products and has any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian.
In people exposed to Salmonella, symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Most people recover without treatment, but diarrhea can be severe enough to require hospitalization. In those cases the infection may move from the intestines into the bloodstream and on to other parts of the body, leading to arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
In people exposed to Listeria monocytogenes, symptoms include headache, fever, muscle aches, lethargy, loss of appetite, nausea, and diarrhea, and in rare cases confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant people, newborns, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious illness. An infection during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or a life-threatening infection in the newborn.
Anyone who develops these symptoms after handling one of the recalled products, or after contact with a pet that ate one, should contact their healthcare provider.
Recalled Northwest Naturals Pet Food
The recalled products were distributed to retail stores nationwide. Both are frozen raw chicken recipes, identified as follows:

What Pet Parents Should Do
If you purchased any of the affected cat or dog food:
- Stop feeding the recalled lots to your dog or cat right away.
- Return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.
- Do not sell or donate the recalled food.
- Wash your hands with soap and water, then clean and sanitize bowls, utensils, storage containers, and any surface the food touched.
- Call your veterinarian if your pet ate a recalled lot and is showing symptoms, and your healthcare provider if you develop symptoms yourself.

Safe Handling of Raw Pet Food
As with all raw pet food, safe handling is essential to protecting both pets and the people in the household. Anyone handling raw pet food should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water after contact; clean and sanitize any surfaces, bowls, utensils, and storage areas the product touches; keep raw pet food separate from human food; and store it frozen or refrigerated until use.
