Your dog is no scruffy-looking nerf herder—he’s the brightest lightsaber in the galaxy!

From people and planets to droids, aliens, and hairy humanoids, there are countless Star Wars characters, places, and creatures to draw inspiration from when naming your dog.

Whether you’re a casual spectator or a die-hard fan of the franchise, you will be sure to find an out-of-this-world option on our list of the best Star Wars dog names.

Our Favorite Star Wars Dog Names

These dog names inspired by the Star Wars movies and TV series make a hyperspace jump to the top of our list:

Chewie: A gentle giant with a big heart, Chewbacca is the faithful, fuzzy best friend we all wish we had. As Han Solo’s co-pilot aboard the Millennium Falcon, Chewie demonstrated his loyalty and bravery time and again. (Just don’t get on his bad side—you don’t want to see what a Wookiee is capable of when he’s angry!) Chewie may seem obvious as a dog name, but it works well on so many different levels—especially for big fluffy dog breeds like Tibetan Mastiffs and Alaskan Malamutes.

Artoo: A loyal, brave and reliable sidekick, R2-D2 is one of the most loveable droids in the galaxy (though his BFF C-3PO may beg to differ). Whenever Luke Skywalker and friends were in trouble, Artoo was always quick to the rescue. We love this name for a steadfast pup. Just replace those trademark beeps and bloops for playful barks and nose boops, and you’ve got a true-blue Artoo.

Threepio: He may be the pessimist of the bunch—and a perpetual worrywart—but this detail-oriented droid unwittingly keeps the team moving forward in the midst of conflict. C-3PO’s knowledge of protocol and fluency in millions of languages—and quick-witted comebacks—make him a valuable player. We think Threepio would be the perfect moniker for a polite and fastidious pup who prefers to stay out of trouble.

Jedi: An ancient order of protectors who served as guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy, these selfless knights harness the power of a mysterious energy called the Force. Unlike their enemies on the dark side, the Jedi use the Force for “knowledge and defense, never for attack.” We can’t think of a better name for a calm dog with a positive vibe who is eager to learn new tricks.

Yoda: Yoda may have been small, but his personality was larger than life. A legendary Jedi Master who had a super strong connection with the Force, Yoda was a patient teacher with infinite wisdom. After all, he lived to be about 900 years old. With a name like Yoda, your dog would have a big reputation to live up to, but we have complete faith. This would be an adorable name for a Pug, Chihuahua or Boston Terrier, which are among the longest living dog breeds. Bonus points if your pup has pointy ears and wrinkles.

Jabba (the Mutt): OK, so there’s not much to like about Jabba the Hutt, the giant, slug-like alien gangster who ran a criminal empire on the desert planet of Tatooine. But we love everything about a roly-poly mixed-breed named Jabba the Mutt. Just don’t let him boss you around from his doggie bed throne!

Girl Star Wars Dog Names

If your pup is a little rebel, one of these Star Wars girl names for dogs will have you siding with the Resistance.

Leia: Fearless, quick-witted, hard-headed, determined… Princess Leia Organa was all of these things and more. She’s not your stereotypical “damsel-in-distress” kind of princess—far from it. As the formidable leader of the Rebel Alliance and founder of the Resistance, she was a true hero. We think this name would be great for a sassy, strong-willed dog with a take charge attitude.

Padmé: A skilled negotiator who stuck to her values, Padmé Amidala was a staunch proponent of peace. This Queen-turned-Senator of Naboo, a pastoral planet, also happened to be Anakin Skywalker’s wife and birth mother of twins Leia and Luke. This would be a fitting name for a devoted and clever dog who often manages to outsmart you.

Rey: An orphan from Jakku, an isolated desert planet, Rey was a resourceful scavenger and skilled mechanic. After discovering her strong connection to the Force, she trained under Luke Skywalker and became a key member of the Resistance. We love this name for a calm, level-headed dog who easily adapts to new situations—but also has a stubborn side.

Jyn: A rebel with a rap sheet, Jyn Erso was an aggressive, skilled fighter who refused to back down in the face of danger. She joined a squad of Rebel Alliance soldiers on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s superweapon space station, during a pivotal battle. This name is fitting for a dog with a rebellious attitude who is kind and caring underneath that tough exterior.

Amilyn: She may have been a bit of an oddball (and a hippie of sorts), but the purple-haired Amilyn Holdo was a respected Resistance officer and talented strategist—and she did it all in a turtleneck gown. A longtime friend of Leia’s, Amilyn took over the reins of the fleet after Leia was critically injured. Though not everyone took to her leadership style, Amilyn left an indelible mark when she made the ultimate sacrifice. We think this is a good choice for a quirky, intelligent dog with a spiritual side.

Boy Star Wars Dog Names

Dog looks like an Ewok

From heroes to villains, there’s no shortage of boy Star Wars dog names for your canine companion:

Obi: Gifted Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi (aka Ben) was a noble protector and mentor to Luke Skywalker. Obi-Wan’s original Padawan (Star Wars speak for Jedi apprentice) was Anakin Skywalker, but we all know that teacher-pupil relationship didn’t end so well (enter Darth Vader). Though Obi-Wan ultimately sacrificed his life to save Luke, his spirit lived on. This name would be fitting for a wise, gentle dog who is capable of teaching his humans important life lessons.

Vader: A Jedi Knight-turned Sith Lord, Darth Vader was devoted to the dark side. The hardened, helmeted Vader was faithful and obedient to his evil master, Darth Sidius, for many years, but there was still a shred of good buried somewhere underneath that black suit of armor, as he demonstrated in his final moments. While we hope your dog doesn’t share the qualities of a sinister villain, we still think this is a badass name for a tough dog who takes the occasional walk on the dark side. (And it sounds way cooler than Darth.)

Luke: A young but skilled pilot, Luke Skywalker scored major points after destroying the first Death Star and sealing the Rebel Alliance’s victory over the Empire in the Battle of Yavin. Luke, Leia and Han formed an indomitable trio—a force to be reckoned with. But it wasn’t until Luke confronted his father, Darth Vader, during the Battle of Endor that he fulfilled his destiny and became a true Jedi. This is a fitting name for an optimistic but slightly temperamental pup who goes out of his way to protect his favorite humans.

Han: This cocky hotshot pilot may have had a reputation as a scoundrel, but Han Solo had a soft side, too. As captain of the Millennium Falcon, with Chewie at his side, he played an integral role in the rebel fight against the Empire. He also won Leia’s heart. This name is ideal for an arrogant yet charming dog who always finds a way out of trouble. If Han doesn’t feel right, Solo would also make a great choice!

Lando: In the words of his frenemy Han Solo, Lando Calrissian was a “card player, gambler, scoundrel.” He may have been deceitful, but he was a con man with a conscience. He showed his true colors when he joined the rebellion and helped destroy the second Death Star. We think this would be a great choice for a dapper dog who always seeks adventure.
