Company Announcement

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Gold Star Distribution, Inc. is recalling a wide variety of products, including dog food, cat food, dog treats, and cat litter sold in three states. The company issued the voluntary recall after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found rodent and bird contamination at one of its facilities.

This recall applies to certain lots of pet products, including:

  • Purina Dog Chow
  • Purina Cat Chow
  • 9 Lives Cat Food
  • Fancy Feast Cat Food
  • Tidy Cat Litter
  • Cosmo’s Snack Shack Bakery Bone Dog Treats

The recalled products were sold at stores located in Minnesota, Indiana, and North Dakota. For a complete list of the stores and their locations, refer to the Gold Star recall announcement on the FDA website.

FDA inspectors found insanitary conditions at a Gold Star facility, citing the presence of bird droppings, rodent droppings, and rodent urine in areas where consumer products, human food, and pet food were held.

These conditions create a significant risk that products could become contaminated through contact with contaminated surfaces or exposure to airborne particulates associated with animal waste.

While no illnesses have been reported to date, people and pets exposed to affected products could face serious health risks, including the potential for bacterial contamination, which may result in illness or infection.

Health Risks for Pets and People

One particular risk associated with rodent contamination is Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections at-risk populations. These include infants, young children, frail or elderly people, pregnant people, those with pre-existing conditions (e.g., cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, etc.), and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.

Pets and people that consume or come in contact with products contaminated with rodent filth are especially at risk. Rodents are the main reservoirs of Leptospira, the bacteria that causes leptospirosis in humans and animals.
